The layout of a plant should be constantly adapted to changing needs. With the introduction of lean thinking the true characteristic of a Plant Layout must be to reduce the Throughput Time: the Operations Orientation have to switch from Capacity to Value Stream, and the Plant Structure from Technology to Crossing Time.
To achieve these features is necessary to start from the Value Stream Design, and on this draw the Ideal Plant, based on this it will be possible, taking into account the constraints, to derive the real layout and then a detailed layout with a complete definition of all workstations, material flows and services.
This approach is likely to be achieved on a new factory but it is also possible in defining the new layout of an existing plant often yielding substantial benefits in Throughput Time and Waste Reduction.
If interested, you can explore these issues during the training day dedicated to Ideal Plant to be held on next October 19, 2016.
